Dog wellbeing treatments in Newcastle upon Tyne, offering personalised, gentle therapies to support your dog’s health, comfort and recovery.

These gentle, tailored dog wellbeing treatments help reduce pain, stress and anxiety, supporting both chronic and acute conditions. They encourage deep relaxation, improve comfort and mobility, and aid healing, enhancing overall health, wellbeing and preventative care.

This holistic dog wellbeing service supports both ends of the lead, recognising the special and powerful bond between you and your dog and how it influences wellbeing for both. Available across Newcastle upon Tyne and surrounding areas helping you and your dog feel calmer, more comfortable and connected.

As a Certified Animal Practitioner, I personalise treatments to suit your dog’s individual needs. Using a unique blend of gentle techniques, I aim to ease pain, reduce stress and calm anxiety, supporting a wide range of conditions and aiding recovery from surgery, illness or injury.

These treatments can lead to many benefits, including improved relaxation, comfort and mobility, calmer behaviour, stronger trust, and enhanced overall health and wellbeing. They also offer a valuable, supportive complement to veterinary care.

My decision to extend the services was inspired by seeing the significant improvements in my own dog, Gracie. After her spay surgery, Gracie experienced discomfort and was reluctant to go to the toilet. My treatments eased her pain as we observed her become more active and comfortable, allowing her to stop her pain medication early and she recovered quickly. Motivated by these outcomes I wanted to share the benefits with other dogs, so I gained further training, skills and certification to provide a professional service.

Holistic Dog Wellbeing

Through my holistic work with people, I have seen that wellbeing is mostly influenced by relationships and environment, and the same applies to dogs. Like people, dogs develop their own personalities and behaviours shaped by their life experiences and what they learn along the way.

By understanding how relationships, environment and experiences can affect a dog’s nervous system, behaviours and overall health, together we can better support their wellbeing.

When dogs display behaviour that may be seen as unwanted, they are not being difficult or stubborn, more often it is their way to seek safety and reassurance in an environment where they cannot communicate their needs and feelings with words.

Dogs use subtle cues to communicate, so I pay close attention to each dog’s body language, behaviour and responses. I use gentle techniques to create an environment of calm, safety, trust and clearer communication. Building this foundation is crucial, as it helps regulate the dog’s nervous system which is like human’s yet far more sensitive. As a result, dogs benefit significantly from their personalised treatment allowing our sessions to be more effective and an excellent complement to veterinary care.

The Treatment

The treatment is a gentle, non-invasive, and relaxing experience for your dog. Sessions take place in the comfort of your dog’s natural surroundings, where it is a familiar and safe environment.

Before an initial session, you’ll be asked to complete a Dog Profile Form providing valuable information for me to tailor a personalised plan. I can answer any questions, discuss your aims, explain my approach, and outline available options before making an appointment that suits us both.

What to expect during a session

A session lasts up to one hour and is tailored to your dog’s unique needs and comfort. I begin with an assessment of your dog’s nervous system state and use techniques designed to regulate their system. This helps to create an environment of calm, safety, trust and better communication before any further steps are taken. Each session is personalised and guided by your dog’s cues, respecting their boundaries is crucial, I carefully observe their responses and adapt the session as needed, combining the therapies that best support their wellbeing at that time.

Depending on your dog’s preferences, I may work with my hands directly on their body, just above it, or even at a distance. The session may consist of several phases, allowing your dog to choose whether to relax nearby, wander off or pause for a drink of water. Some dogs actively seek out touch or indicate areas of discomfort that need attention. During the session, your dog may experience various sensations, such as warmth or coolness, and you might notice subtle cues or slight twitching because of deep relaxation.

Aftercare

After a session, it is important to give your dog time to adjust and allow them to listen to their own body. You may notice that your dog appears more relaxed, experiences less pain, feels more tired than usual, or displays an increase in energy. This is all part of the natural adjustment period as their body responds to the therapy.

To support your dog, encourage them to drink some water after the session. Hydration helps to flush out any toxins that may have been released during the treatment, aiding the body’s natural processes. Typically, you might notice further improvement in your dog’s wellbeing within 24 hours of the session.

Dogs are highly attuned to their owners and often reflect their human’s state of wellbeing. For this reason, it may be beneficial for both you and your dog if you also receive treatment. This can be offered as part of your dog’s therapy session, as a separate session for you, or as a combined wellbeing package for both of you.

“Thanks so much Elaine. This has been a wonderful experience for both of us. Paddy is relaxed and I feel great.” – Paddy

Therapies Used

Somatic Techniques

Somatic exercises are gentle, slow body movements that can improve dogs’ wellbeing by resetting their nervous and sensory-motor systems. Scientific evidence shows benefits include greater calmness therefore reduced reactivity and anxiety, co-regulation so increased trust and connection, better body awareness improving balance and mobility.

Acupressure

Acupressure is therapeutic method for supporting overall wellness, physical, mental and emotional. Using light touch techniques to stimulate specific acupoints along meridians on the face and body. Dogs are highly sensitive to touch so lighter pressure and alternative technique of stimulation are used to ensure comfort, safety and consent.

Scientific research supports acupressure as an effective complimentary therapy for managing many conditions, benefits being muscle relaxation, improved circulation, reduced anxiety and pain. Studies also validating the mechanisms behind the pressure applied releasing endorphins; natural pain relief, promoting relaxation and balancing the energy system.

Reiki

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive therapy, that supports pain management, stress reduction and deep relaxation. The treatment stimulates the body’s natural healing response and promotes balance and overall wellbeing.

Reiki is a complimentary therapy suitable for all regardless of species, age or health condition. Clinical research shows Reiki treatments can effectively support pain management, reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and aid the body’s natural healing process.

How often are sessions required

Even a single session can make a difference. However, a course of regular treatments allows your dog’s body and nervous system to respond more deeply over time, creating lasting change rather than temporary improvement.

Packages of care are reviewed regularly and adapted based on your preferences and your dog’s progress. Each session is thoughtfully designed around your dog’s unique needs, always prioritising trust, comfort, and long-term wellbeing.

Sessions may be recommended weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or less frequently depending on your dog’s individual needs.

Limited weekly availability ensures every client receives the highest level of personalised care.

Testimonials

I can’t say enough good things about Elaine and My Dog Matters. After the holistic wellbeing session, I noticed a real difference in my dog, calmer, more balanced, and genuinely more at ease. It wasn’t just about treating symptoms; it felt like Elaine truly cared about my dog’s overall health, happiness, and emotional wellbeing. The service was thoughtful, gentle, and clearly guided by a deep understanding of dogs as individuals. I felt supported throughout the process and reassured knowing my dog was in such caring, knowledgeable hands. I would highly recommend My Dog Matters to any dog owner looking for a more holistic, compassionate approach to their dog’s wellbeing.” – Tess (Full testimonial)

“I highly recommend Elaine at My Dog Matters! My 10-year-old dog, Derek, has arthritis and a heart murmur, and he’s an excitable yet anxious guy. Elaine made the session so relaxed, letting him go at his own pace, and he loved it! He came back for more, which says it all.
Elaine was professional and easy to talk to, and Derek seemed so calm and content afterward. Even our cat was curious and wanted to join in.
Thank you, Elaine, for such a wonderful experience!”
Derek

“Our 13-year-old golden retriever had the most wonderful relaxing experience from Elaine.
He has Osteoarthritis and his back legs are very weak. He also has a few health issues and has lots of pain medication from our vets. I wasn’t sure how he would accept a wellbeing session, but he welcomed Elaine immediately and lay down for her straight away. I think being in his own home also really helped him to relax. Afterwards he slept peacefully and was snoring, which he only does when he is in a deep sleep and pain free.
Thank you so much for all the advice you gave me, and you have certainly worked your magic on Barney.” – Barney

“Thank you for the sessions. It seems to have improved her digestion as the day after she would go to the toilet sooner.– Honey
